Myrna said nothing when she climbed in Josh’s pickup. Her lips were clamped together.

“Did you hear Beth and me talking?”

“I think most of Lafayette County heard you two talking.”

“Mom, why do you want to work for Beth?”

Myrna looked at her son. “Why wouldn’t I?”

“It doesn’t seem right. You’re sixty-three years old!”

“Whew. Either shoot me or put me out to pasture one.”

“You never worked when Dad was alive,” Josh added.

Neither of them said anything. Joshua started his truck and headed for home. His pickup bumped on the uneven gravel road.

Finally, Myrna spoke. “Losing your dad was real hard for me. I was married to him longer than I wasn’t. We had a lot of plans for after he retired. We wanted to buy an RV and travel. Go see all the states. But the good Lord didn’t seem to agree with that plan, and now your dad is gone. I miss him. When I heard Beth needed help, I thought it might be good for me to get out of that empty house. I enjoy helping you raise Max and Sam, but it’s nice to be around women. I like Beth. I like Trina, too. I’m teaching both of them to cook. So, no. I don’t mind working for Beth. I feel like, I’m called to be of service in this world, to be useful to others. Helping you with Sam and Max after school makes me feel that way, but so does cooking at Stratton House, overseeing the kitchen, helping Beth and her brides plan menus, and making sure the caterers always have what they need.”

“It just doesn’t seem right that, at your age, you’re still working.”

“Son, it’s my choice. With the money your dad left me, I’m comfortable. But working at Stratton House gets me out. It’s fun to meet the brides and show the caterers our kitchen. It’s fun to plan a gift shop, what we’re gonna sell and how it’s gonna be laid out. Heck! We’re talking about hiring a caterer for Stratton House and writing a cookbook. Beth doesn’t know any of this stuff and neither do I. We’re learning together.”
